一年的聖誕節，小男孩收到一隻絨毛兔玩偶，不過沒玩多久，他就被其他玩具吸引，把絨毛兔丟在一旁了。 絨毛兔內心很渴望成為「真的」，但是要如何才能成為「真的」？ 有一個玩具馬跟他說「真的不是指你是怎麼做成的，而是發生在你身上的事情。 當一個孩子愛你很久，不只是跟你玩，而是真的愛你，那麼你就會變成真的了！」 雖然後來小男孩因為生病的關係，被迫把絨毛兔給丟棄，但絨毛兔卻真的變成了一隻兔子。 某天，小男孩在樹林，遇見一隻很像他小時候丟掉的那隻小兔子！ 或許小男孩永遠都不會知道，這隻兔子真的是他當初丟下的那隻兔子。 小男孩和絨毛兔之間動人又深刻的友誼，提醒著我們，每個人都值得被愛。

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit. 「什麼是真的？」
“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” 「真的不是指你是怎麼做成的，而是發生在你身上的事情。 當一個孩子愛你很久，不只是跟你玩，而是真的愛你，那麼你就會變成真的了！」
“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. 會痛嗎？
“Sometimes.” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” 當你變成真的以後，就不會在意那種痛了。
“Does it happen all at one, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”
“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eye drop out and you get loose in the joins and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” 一旦變成真的，就不會有人覺得你醜，除了不了解狀況的人以外。
